Tawes Garden Tour: Reforestation

This small stand of evergreens is actually a tree farm in operation.
Just as a farmer raises crops, Maryland foresters raise trees. Seedlings are planted and cared for, grow and in time are harvested as high quality timber.

The wood we get from trees plays a very important part in our everyday lives, and good management of our forests is necessary to continue to produce enough wood to meet our needs. Trees are also beneficial to the environment in that they purify the air, provide habitats for wildlife, and help prevent soil erosion, as well as adding beauty to the surrounding landscape.

Fortunately, trees are a renewable resource. We can always plant seeds to grow more trees. With mineral resources such as coal or oil, it is not possible to renew them; once they are used, they are gone. Wise use, or conservation, is important with all our natural resources so that they are available for the needs of future generations.
