How long have you been a volunteer?

Judith has been a volunteer for Patapsco since April of 2019.

What do you do for employment?

Retired for 3 years, but she worked for the Federal Government in D.C. for 30 years and served in the military when she was a young adult.

How long have you lived in the area?

Lived in Ellicott City for 30+ years

Do you volunteer other places besides Patapsco Valley?

Judith volunteers for a Non-Profit tax firm during tax season; she helps clients and the overall operations of the Non-Profit.

What is your favorite thing about Patapsco?

Judith’s favorite thing about Patapsco is the staff. She complimented everyone's dedication and passion towards the efforts of the park. She enjoys the presence of the individuals that work at the park.

What volunteer projects are you in at Patapsco?

Judith volunteers at the McKeldin Contact station and is a part of the Seniors program at Patapsco, and she stays on hand for any other extra volunteer work such as counting the park revenue on Monday, picking up trash, or helping with efforts towards the operations of the park.

Describe one of your favorite volunteer memories with Patapsco?

One of Judith’s favorite volunteer memories is when she got to work with the young adults. She said that it was eye opening see the younger generation volunteer and they were very respectful to her. She went on to tell me the fun she had working with them and that she would do it again any day.

Why is it important for you to volunteer?

Judith has been volunteering ever since she was a child. She volunteered at parks, churches, retirement homes and her surrounding neighborhoods. Something that personally stood out to me is that she didn’t even consider her actions as volunteering because it felt so normal for her to do these things. It is important to her because this is something she values and it's been a pattern throughout her life to volunteer.

Volunteer Camp Hosts

Do you love the outdoors? Do you get excited about sharing your love of nature with others? Perhaps you have some spare time, and would like to share a little with our park and park visitors.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Patapsco Valley State Park. They are involved in just about every aspect of park operations. Our volunteers do so many fantastic things within the park. On any given day you can find our volunteer rangers running daily operations, and our volunteer naturalists leading hikes or doing nature crafts. Perhaps you will encounter a member of our volunteer mounted patrol while you are out on the trails, and on that very same hike you might meet our trail maintenance volunteers or even one of our Adopt-a-Trail families. Don’t be surprised to see one of our volunteer photographers snapping pictures of people and nature within the park. If you stop in our visitor center or our nature center you will more than likely meet one of our volunteer docents who will be thrilled to share interesting information about the park.

Do you think your talents are not suited for a park? We have graphic designers, marketing specialists, artists, carpenters, plumbers, stone masons and seamstresses that all have volunteered to help create brochures, build decks and benches, promote our programs to media and even sew curtains for our mini-cabins.

So if you have a little extra time to spare, I invite you to join the Patapsco volunteer family. We would love to have you as part of our team!
