Plant Changes on the Trail of Change

Pocomoke River State Park Trail of Change

In this year’s Park Quest at Pocomoke River State Park you will be identifying a variety of tree species located throughout the park. It can be completed on the Trail of Change but you are not limited to that one trail. Your team will need to print your packet with a dichotomous key that will assist in your identification.

PRSP_DockArea.pngA Dichotomous Key is a tool that allows users to determine the identity of items in nature by going through a series of choices that lead the user to the correct item.

In this Park Quest activity, you will be using your Dichotomous Key to identify at least SEVEN (7) species of trees or shrubs you come across. You can pick up and drop off your packet at either the Nature Center or the Camp Store.

Summer ForestPocomoke River State Park

The scenic Pocomoke River is the setting for Pocomoke River State Park. Located within the 15,000 wooded acres of Pocomoke State Forest in the Southwestern section of Worcester County the park provides a base for a vast array of outdoor and tourist activities. The forest is famous for its stand of loblolly pine and for its cypress swamps which border the wild and scenic Pocomoke River. Pocomoke means black water, and there is good fishing in these waters. The river originates in the Great Cypress Swamp in Delaware and flows southwesterly 45 miles to the Chesapeake Bay. The park’s combination of swamp and upland offers visitors the opportunity to view a great variety of plant and animal life, including white dogwood and pink laurel in the spring, river otters and bald eagles, and over 50 species of fish.
