Is My White Perch Wearing Lipstick?
Location: Nans Cove
I took the opportunity this afternoon to take the kayak out at Nan's Cove on the Patuxent River. I ended up catching a half dozen White Perch and a couple of croakers. The last perch I caught looked a little strange. I figure he's been feeding on something. Any ideas what? Or is it something else?
DNR Response: Based on the pictures, it looks like hemorrhage and inflammation (reddening) around the mouth and nares. There may be a touch by the eyes as well. It may have been caught and released recently. In warm water, the area around the mouth can get red from inflammation after being caught, if the fish survives long enough. It can take hours or longer for the inflammation to develop.
