Perfect Day For Fishing

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Loch Raven Reservoir
Tags:

I went fishing today with my dad. We went to our favorite fishing spot at Loch Raven Reservoir. I caught two fish. I used the new bait I bought from the suggestion of Ron the awesome customer representative in the Fishing Department at Bass Pro in Arundel Mills, Hanover, Maryland. I went shopping on Saturday with my Bass Pro Gift Card I won. Ron was awesome and he spent a long time giving me fishing tips to catch that big bass one day! The weather today was a perfect day to be fishing. I also met a new friend fishing today. It was another great day at Loch Raven Reservoir.

Surf Fishing at Flag Harbor

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Lower Bay
Location: Flag Harbor Beach
Tags: Striped Bass, Spot, Bluefish, Whiting

Location: Flag Harbor Beach in Late Evening
Tide: Flood and the Wind: 15-20 NE
Method: Surf fishing using Blood worms/ Cut Bait

On Saturday evening, Nathan tried out his new fishing reel combo he won from the Maryland Fishing Challenge off the beach at Flag Harbor. He caught a lot of spot, bluefish, and whiting. The big surprise was a nice 19 in rockfish that gave his new rod/reel combo a fighting challenge but Nathan came out on top and landed the fish. Thank you to DNR and Bass Pro Shop for sponsoring this great youth program!

Hooked on Fishing After First Catch

Type: Ocean
Region: Eastern
Location: Ocean City, MD
Tags: Croaker

My son Eric, age 12 has Autism and my dad (69 years old) is an avid fisherman. During the last 12 years Eric has never had an interest to fish. I know that has always broken my dad's heart. He has tried for many years to get him to fish or at least go in a boat. This summer we were in Ocean City, Maryland for vacation. One evening our family (grand-dad & grand mom included) went out on the beach to fish and told Eric what we were doing. He seemed to like the idea and we asked him if he wanted to hold the rod. He complied and within 5 minutes he caught a fish. Well that's all it took. He was hooked. He caught another one within 5 minutes and another one. It was an exciting night to say the least, especially to have his grandfather present. The smiles on everyone's faces that night was priceless. I have attached 3 pictures. One picture shows his first fish and the 2nd photo is his 2nd fish (I think both croakers) and the 3rd photo is something I never thought I would get a picture of….and that was Eric holding a rod and looking off into the ocean. It was an amazing site.

Savage River Reservoir Trout

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Savage River Dam
Tags: Rainbow Trout, Maryland Youth Fishing Club, Maryland Fishing Challenge

We figured out the fall pattern for catching rainbow trout. Dad and I fished the Savage River Reservoir from our Canoe on Saturday 9-6-14 and caught our limit of trout. I caught this nice 18" trout. We saw an American Bald Eagle flying in to land and I grabbed the camera and got these pictures of it, he is in the center of the one picture sitting on a tree branch. The next day we headed to the fishing challange finale where I won a fishing rod, a tackle box, and best of all a fishing trip on the Baltimore Harbor. Thanks to the DNR for having the fishing challenge and a great big thanks to captain Tom Hughes for donating the fishing trips and to Matt from the Fisheries Service who presented the youth awards. I am very excited about the fishing trip with Captain Tom and can hardly wait until next year to go on it. Matt, we are looking forward to learning ice fishing this year and hope to see you out there.
