Coastal Atlas: Estuaries
The Estuaries mapping tool allows users to access information and maps identifying critical tidal and near-shore aquatic resources and habitats and their surrounding landscapes to focus conservation, restoration and management activities. This mapping tool also allows users to identify areas for suitable conservation and/or restoration of future wetland adaptation in response to sea level rise. The aquatic resources and habitats available through this tool are available for both the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays.
The Estuaries mapping tool delivers the results of the recently completed Blue Infrastructure Near-shore Assessment – a detailed spatial assessment of coastal habitat, critical natural resources and associated human uses in the tidal waters and near-shore area of Maryland’s coastal zone – through which the coastal habitats of Maryland’s Chesapeake and Coastal Bays, tidal waters and Ocean were mapped, assessed and prioritized. The near-shore assessment identified areas that contain sensitive aquatic habitats and resources along with the ecological and physical characteristics critical to their long-term maintenance. The assessment may directly enhance the scope of information considered in near-shore parcel evaluations, conservation easement negotiations, shore erosion control decisions and NOAA Coastal & Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) proposals. By providing access to this data, the Estuaries mapping tool can help coastal managers and planners identify coastal habitats where conservation and restoration activities can maintain and improve coastal resources.

Estuaries Wetland Change Tool
This tool shows the percentage of a selected county that is currently classified as various types of wetlands and how they could change by 2100 with increased sea-level rise. Projected ‘New Wetland Areas’ for years 2050 and 2100, based on Maryland’s Sea-Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) study, provide insight into potential future wetland migration zones. To select a county, click inside the county about which you want to see shoreline change information. To change which county you are viewing, just click inside the new county.
